Slightly More Hydrated, No Less Shakey

Ok, I've already picked up a few songs. I should be working. I know. The fact that I am even here is a major modern miracle, since last night I was convinced I was going to DIE.

Here's what I've got - NO JUDGEMENTS :

Ruffneck | MC Lyte
I was mining a Ladies of Hip Hop Collection. I disagreed with a lot of what was on there, thinking they could have made better selections. This was the gem in that pile.

Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover | Sophie B. Hawkins
YOU KNOW YOU LOVE THIS SONG. I know I did in High School, when it was my Unrequited Love Anthem. I was checking out the iTunes Exclusive Bananarama catalog when I found this on an 80s collection recommended on the page.

Bringin' On The Heartbreak | Def Leppard
iTunes Exclusive: Essential Def Leppard. Personally, for me, saying "Essential" and "Def Leppard" is redundant. I've loved this song since I was 5, and if you doubt me, ask Chris Franklin about the time I tried to steal High 'n' Dry from him. I just grabbed it and started walking out of his room. He caught me, though. DAMMIT.

On a completely unrelated note, and because I need to finish my cheesesteak before getting back to real work, I have noticed that Casual Fridays here at my workplace mean a certain uniform for the ladies: jeans, funky shoes, and a short jacket. Today, incredibly, it's what I'm wearing, too. I'd feel sort of unoriginal if it weren't for the fact that I'm sporting a Dan Band tee as well!

THANKS, WILL!

Can I ask a question to all of you cool kids...I haven't gotton into the iTunes thing yet. Is there a reason one should move away from illegally downloading tunes and move towards paying for music again? Can I get an in depth pro/con list? My main concern is that I will pay for a tune I can only listen to on my PC...can I burn it to CD and rock out in my car??? Please Help! I feel so "un-hip!"

    Rock ON!

I'm not the right person to ask... How about asking one of the thousands of record company employees laid off in the last 3 years whether or not you should start paying for music again? Or maybe the former staff of the Hit Factory? I can put you in touch with Candace and Gary from Cello Studios if you want, they both had to find new jobs to feed their kids and might have very strong opinions about illegal downloading.

Sorry, Rockdog. I had to get that off my chest.

Once you get iTunes, you can burn as many CD's as you want, in any order you want, until the end of time. As far as I know, the only limitation is that the actual MP3 will play only on 1) your PC 2) your MP3 player (like an iPod.) i.e. you can't send the MP3 to a friend... it won't play.

Hey Rockdog - I just got into the iTUNES thing too. I had eMUSIC before, which was $9.99/month, and had a kind of crappy selection.

I think iTUNES is good because they have a decent selection of everything, and you just pay as you go, $.99 a song (sorry, where is the cents symbol on this keyboard??)

I have burned CDs from what I have downloaded and the sound is very good if you are planning to crank it in the car.

So far, the only down side for me personally is that the iMUSIC files can be downloaded to iPODS, but if you have a walkman that plays MP3's you have to convert. Something I have been to lazy to do, lol!!

    I love open debate!

Though I don't do it, as a music fan, I understand the tempation to illegally download music. I very excitedly -and illegally- downloaded about 12 songs when I first got my laptop many, many moons ago. Shortly thereafter, I had to send the damn thing back to Apple for a new motherboard. Hence, my Macster days were over. I'm too superstitious

Any music I have ever desired (or was not given to me), I have purchased. We're talking large quantities, here. Which is probably why I am now living in the ghetto and still owe the US Department of Education my first born son.

I know many people who use Limewire or Kazaa, etc, but I honestly feel that putting those files on my iPod would defile it in some way! I don't trust them. There's probably no logical reason behind this.

So, yeah, I pay for my music. Admiral, please forgive me for those 12 songs. I paid the price, believe me. And I was young and stupid. And you should know that every time my roommate tempts me with free downloads, I do think of you! Btw, I hope you're not working this weekend!

Sam - WORD! I forgot the Hall & Oates, though! Will iTunes on Monday!

I'm actually resting this weekend! Whoohoo!

Sorry I got worked up Rockdog. If you were here I'd give you an awkward, one-armed man-hug.

Here's my deal...now that I run an internet radio station I've been following their rules of only playing music that has been purchased. So, my problem so far has been that if I buy a CD I generally onnly play 2-3 songs on the station. I saw I could purchase tunes online, and most were $.99 (like Sam said)...if I own them how can I get them onto my Radio station? They have to be in MP3 format...? If I burn them to CD, can I then Rip them back to my PC in MP3 format and upload to my station? As a side note, the radio station is legal and pays royalties through ASCAP (???) and other associations that I forget the names of...

Admiral, no hard feelings...and yeah, that hug WOULD be awkward. Hahaha. I'm still on the middle of the fence..or middle of the road, depending on where you are...with downloading music illegally. Since SO many of my friends are somehow in the music business I know second hand how they rely on the royalties. On the other hand, I also know that the only reason it costs $20 to buy a CD in the store is because Record Companies are greedy fucking douche bags, and thus I say Fuck You to said companies. I know it isn't free to create a CD, but their bottom line is no where near $20.

So, I remain legal with my station, but before I buy a new CD I'm usually downloading it somewhere else -->for free<-- first to check it out. If I liekit, I usually buy it...if I don't I have a song on my PC that I will probably never listen to.

    There's my 2 cents...or $20.

What about porn? I mean, who actually goes to the store, or subscribes to Skank, or pay a subscription to a site to check out porn? Porn actresses have to eat too! I say we take up a collection to feed the Porn People something other that sausage!

Did I type too much? Sorry...tried to keep it short :(

Oh! My heart just swelled to two times it's normal size (it is now the size of a pea! Joy!) in the face of such warmth between my boys! I knew you would work it out. If not, I was just going to start writing some lesbian porn so you could bond over that. However, that is a superpower I reserve for only the direst of situations. (checking that I am using this form of "dire" appropriately...hold, please...Ok, I am.)

I am glad to hear you are resting, Admiral. This is a good weekend for that. The weather is shit-tay here in New York, but I'm managing to have a somewhat productive weekend anyway. And by "productive," I mean, "Apparently doing everything in my power to up my geek factor." Last night? I stayed in. And read some of "After the Ball: Gilded Age Secrets, Boardroom Betrayals & The Party That Ignited the Great Wall Street Scandal of 1905." Today, after coffee, a mani/pedi, and a long visit with The Muppet, who is sick, I went to a Burrito place and had dinner by myself while reading my Wired magazine.

Tomorrow, I shall endeavor to do something "cool."

That's the weird thing about this debate... we're both right.

    a) Record Companies are greedy douche-bags.

    AND

    b) Music piracy hurts real people who have bills to pay.

With iTunes EVERYONE WINS! You don't have to pay $20.00 for a CD with only 2 good songs on it. You just pay $1.98 for the two tunes you want and then you tell the other, crappy songs to fuck off, die and burn in hell like the worthless pieces of dog-shit they are!

To upload to your radio station- You got it right, burn a CD, and then re-import it into iTunes. Be sure to select a high-quality bit-rate (in iTunes Preferences) for minimum signal degradation. Then upload that bitch, crack open a beer, and rock the fuck on!
