Thursday is the New Friday

Last night I hung out with an old friend, Victor. When he called at 10:15 p.m., I was checking email before bed. And yes, that included checking out the link to the Fred Durst video. And...ew. Brought back lots of memories, though. Of my days working for The Porn. I digress. I wanted to share with you that I was fully re-made up and out the door by 10:47. That's a personal best for me.

When I returned home, after many whiskeys, stellar conversation, and long-overdue friendly reconnecting, I again sat down to check my email before bed (waiting to hear about some apartments). My roommate walked in shortly after, with a lovely little green present from the doorman.

Living with her has shown me that I heart doormen.

We were about to sit down with the green when she said, "Do I smell like sex?"

"Uh oh. Oh, no, why? You had sex with him?" (NOT THE DOORMAN, some other dude)

"Yeah, and it was actually pretty good."

"Oh, well, that's good!"

sniff. sniiiiiiff. sniff.

"No, you're good. But you do have a HUGE sex knot in the back of your hair."

Then, after the back and forth of the green, I settled in with my iPod to listen to a few tunes before I passed the F out. I will, of course, share what I chose.

Bitches Ain’'t Shit | Ben Folds | iTunes Exclusive

This is Ben Folds covering this song from Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. It’s AWESOME. I have to give mad props to MFDC (www.dancerta.com) for sharing this little discovery with the rest of the world. I love it.

Pictures of You | The Cure | Disintegration

Aw man, I'’m sure you know why I had to listen to this song in my altered state. It’s soooo good. I like to find new ways of hearing it. Last night I was able to do that. Such a classic.

Growing on Me | The Darkness | Permission to Land

I LOVE this song! I love this whole record, and again have to thank MFDC for the recommendation. Of course, I had interpreted this how any new listener to The Darkness would. But then Meghan told me it'’s a song about genital warts. I don'’t know if she ruined it for me, or if it might simply be the best song in the world ever written about genital warts.

Hollaback Girl | Gwen Stefani | Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

This shit is BANANAS! B-A-N-A-N-A-S! This record sounds awesome in my mom'’s Toyota Matrix. I suppose that's very apropos to all the love Gwen gives to the Japanese girls on this record. I don'’t know if that just made any sense. I'’m still hungover, despite large doses of refined sugar, grease, and potatoes.

Battersea | Hooverphonic | Blue Wonder Power Milk

I was OBSESSED with this song when I was preparing to leave L.A. and it reminds me of driving along PCH just to escape the insanity that was that period of my life. I love it. It was perfect to listen to last night at 3:30 a.m.

Real Love | Mary J. Blige | What’s the 411?

I just love this song, period. I love Mary J. Hey! That was a double entendre! Did you see that? What I did just then? Anyway, I listen to this song when I need to get back in touch with my inner Black Queen.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic | The Police | Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings

As with Pictures of You, I wanted to listen to this song so I could get back to the wonder of its AWESOMENESS. I was beginning to associate it with previews for every upcoming romantic comedy release. I got back to it, though. I got waaaay back to it - back enough to realize again that Stewart Copeland OWNS that fucking song. It must have been cold there in Sting'’s shadow, Stewart, but as far as musicianship is concerned, you kicked his ass with some of the flyest, most dopely syncopated percussion of all the Police recordings.

The District Sleeps Alone | The Postal Service | Give Up

If you don’'t have this record yet, you have to get it. I love this song, and I love the sound of this record. I have a deep love and appreciation for what these guys were trying to do and actually managed to accomplish. It makes it OK that there hasn'’t been a new DCFC release since OH THREE.

Such Great Heights | The Postal Service | Give Up

Awesome song. My first love on this record, particularly the first 30 seconds or so. The whole record is a great “headphones” record. Or earbuds, whatever your sitch.

The Double Life | Rainer Maria | Long Knives Down

Rock chicks. This song has become my new NYC anthem. I despair for the day the WB licenses it as the theme song for some bloated teen drama, where the leads are all played by 27 year-old bottled blondes at whom we’re forced to peer through smeary, yellow-tinted filters. “"I wasn'’t paying attention and you quietly reeled me in again.”" Has anybody read any Rilke lately?

Stumble and Fall | Razorlight | Up All Night

Admittedly, I first saw these guys performing live on MTV2. There’'s nothing terribly original about them, yet they're huge in the UK right now. But what does that really mean? They'’re heavily influenced, which is obvious, but they put shit together well. This is a great song and makes me think of my friend, Fer, and how he'’s doing in the Windy City.

He Wasn’t Man Enough | Toni Braxton | The Heat

C’mon, now. We all have songs like these. Songs we luuuuuuurv for no really apparent reason other than the fact that it makes you want to shake your booty. Unfortunately, I fell asleep before the song was over and woke up three hours later for work, in the same position, still connected to my umbilical iPod.

That's how many ways I love this shit, y'all.
